AirTIGHT:Shrinkwrapping Vague Things

Working within the context of fluidity, where the creation of an object was to be regulated by a conversation of shape, color and material, this studio consisted of designing an intake experience (I.E.) for Airbus’s massive A380. This architecture was to afford potential investors an antecedent experience into the branding and concepts of the company by fashioning a narrative that unfolded the theatrics and experience of Airbus prior to entering the aircraft.

Beginning with a study of the plane’s contours and using them as the central form generator, this design relates specifically to the geometry of the A380’s shape grammar. In certain views the I.E. diverges and torques from the plane’s skin while schematically transitioning from a grounded horizontal massing to a strong vertical face.

Understanding the role of branding, the I.E. was conceived as an object similar to a sewing machine where the mechanics of the appliance are ‘wrapped’ in a skin with performative qualities; protection from moving parts and a smooth surface for fabrics. In the case of the I.E., the skin’s primary role was that of a wrapper, reflecting the image of the plane and distorting it across its red candy-like surface, and acting as an iconic message of Airbus’s aeronautical achievements.
